Revisiting An Epic Fantasy Series – Buffy the Vampire Slayer
Sometimes it is nice to visit old friends and this week I have been doing more than my fair share of it. It started when I ran across a copy of the first season of a truly epic fantasy series, Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Yes, it has been years since it first came out, and for me it has particularly good memories because I was working at Paramount those days and got into plenty of discussions with many good people on the lot about the virtues of the concept. It is hard to believe that at one time the very idea of doing an epic fantasy series like this one was generally dismissed as crazy. Heck, Joss Wheden was kind of looked upon as this geeky fanboy with too many comics in those days. Little did they know he would become a television god in his time. But this was before Whedenmania.
When our fantasy series Buffy began, it was an interesting little show based on a quirky movie. But unless you have revisited it lately, you can forget just how good it was. Michelle Geller has just enough of the geek in her portrayal of Buffy that you can buy into the tongue-in-cheek approach to magic and all things vampire. Good ole Giles looks as strangely sexy and bookish all rolled into one and Angel, ah Angel. I forgot how mysterious he is at first – how you don’t have a clue just who he is and like Buffy you aren’t really sure you want to know.
I love the fact that these days no good television show is ever lost to us, it is all available whenever we want and even better, these days it is streamable so we can watch it right now! I have gotten to the point where I just steam all my media, never own a thing, and don’t really care. Feel like re-watching Buffy for the night, the whole first season? Easy as pie.
So excuse me while I go check out what other fun little epic fantasy series I had forgotten how much I loved that Amazon has sitting around. I can see old stuff, new stuff and even some fantasy or science fiction or romance I had never heard of until now.
The truth is, there are a lot of good stories to explore out there and we have never had it so easy to find them all. So whether you enjoy our Buffy in the form of the epic fantasy series on television, the new really great books that tell the stories we missed between seasons or the movie, just getting into them again is such fun!
